Debbie Paine was diagnosed with breast cancer after results of her mammogram came back abnormal. When she turned to UF Health for treatment options, Debbie found a team of medical professionals ready to embark with her on her journey to beat cancer. Her multidisciplinary breast cancer team was composed of surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists working together to devise a treatment course tailored to her specific breast cancer care needs.
For Debbie, her care involved surgery and targeted therapy with radiation to eliminate cancer cells. Some patients may only require surgery; while others may need to leverage chemotherapy or other common breast cancer treatment options.
Like all UF Heath breast cancer patients, Debbie was given access to a nurse navigator, who helped guide her through any issues that she encountered. In addition to delivering case management services, nurse navigators also provide support, both clinical and emotional, for the duration of a patient’s treatment course.

Optimal management of breast cancer may involve a combination of surgery and radiation and/or medical therapies. Together, these treatments provide patients with the greatest chance of cure and the lowest chance of cancer recurrence.
Combining different types of treatment - known as multidisciplinary care - is at the core of the breast center team’s approach to treating breast cancer. New patients are reviewed during the center’s weekly Breast Cancer Tumor Board, where UF surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, rehabilitation specialists and social workers collaborate to design comprehensive and personalized treatment plans for every patient.
To ensure a seamless transition from your referring physician, a dedicated nurse navigator will coordinate all aspects of your care, from the initial visit and evaluation through treatment and recovery, including follow-up consultations.
