My bio

Dr. Debbie-Ann Shirley was born on the island of Jamaica and completed her medical training at the University of the West Indies, graduating with honors. She went on to complete her pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore, where she received the Harry Gordon Award for Excellence in Scholarly Activity.

She then pursued fellowship training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland’s renowned Center for Vaccine Development, gaining expertise in early-phase clinical trials for vaccines and therapeutics. During this time, she also earned a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Shirley joined the faculty at the University of Virginia, where she served as Chief of the Infectious Diseases Division and Director of the COVID Outpatient Clinic. In recognition of her clinical contributions, she received the UVA School of Medicine Dean’s Clinical Excellence Award.

In 2023, she joined the University of Florida College of Medicine and currently serves as Division Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Shirley met her husband, UF physician-scientist Dr. Shannon Moonah, during medical school. They live in Gainesville, Florida, where they are raising their two children.
