My bio
Hello, I am Derly Munoz, a physical therapist at UF Health. My journey in the field of physical therapy began at Rosario University in Colombia, where I completed my physical therapy school. Seeking to enhance my skills and knowledge, I pursued further education at the University of St. Augustine, obtaining my manual therapy certification. Over the years, I have pursued numerous certifications to expand my expertise, including aquatic therapy certification from the Aquatic Therapy Institute and cranio-facial Certification from the University of St. Augustine. My commitment to ongoing learning culminated in oncology board certification from the American Physical Therapy Association, and most recently, a dry needling certification from the University of St. Augustine.
Specializing in adult oncology, temporomandibular disorders and aquatic therapy, I find immense fulfillment in the positive impact I make on my patients' lives. I am deeply passionate about educating patients and empowering them with tools to enhance their quality of life. Driven by a desire to address the growing need for oncology physical therapy, one of my goals is to establish an oncology residency program within our system. I aim to equip more therapists with the necessary skills to effectively treat oncology patients and support them through their cancer journey.
In addition to my clinical work, I am actively involved in research initiatives. My current research focuses on secondary breast-related lymphedema, and I aspire to delve into the impact of exercise at the cellular level to assess the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on cancer cells. Furthermore, I am interested in exploring the benefits of physical therapy interventions on preoperative and pre-rehabilitation for head and neck cancer patients.
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active with workouts, dancing and outdoor activities. I also cherish moments spent traveling, watching movies, dining out and relaxing at the beach. Originally from Colombia, South America, I take pride in building my career in a foreign country while maintaining strong ties to my heritage. I am fluent in Spanish and serve as an official Spanish interpreter. In my personal life, I find joy in celebrating life's moments with loved ones, including my two sons. One of my sons is currently pursuing a career in PA school, while the other, who graduated from college with Down Syndrome, competes in the Special Olympics, filling me with immense pride and joy.
