My bio

Hi, I’m Dr. Joanne S. Buitrago and am an Assistant Clinical Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Florida. I specialize in reconstructive surgery, aesthetic breast and body contouring and the bread of general plastic surgery. My inspiration to become a doctor stem from watching my dad practice general surgery, his passion and dedication to his patients and what a tremendous impact it had on the lives of members of our community.

I graduated summa cum laude from Auburn University and completed my medical degree with honors from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. I started my surgical training at Harvard’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA followed by a research fellowship at the University of Miami.

I completed training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Miami, FL, with a particular interest and expertise in post mastectomy reconstructive surgery, including both implant based and autologous breast reconstruction with microsurgical techniques. I am especially passionate about general plastic surgery and reconstructive body contouring after massive weight loss patients including abdominoplasty, thigh lift, brachioplasty and breast augmentation.

I have published research in many medical journals and presented at numerous national conventions. My work has been focused on improving patients’ care and perioperative outcomes especially in plastic and thoracic surgery.

Helping people is something I have always been passionate about. I have volunteered at homeless shelters, therapy programs including horseback riding for kids with disabilities, and local humane societies for over 20 years.

I take great pride delivering the highest quality of care to patients in a relaxed and comfortable environment, understanding individual goals and desires to create ideal personalized plan for them.

Outside of work I enjoy long-distance running and have completed over 10 marathons, with my eye set on completing Abbott World Marathon Majors. I am an avid equestrian and love horseback riding, cooking and spending time with my family and dogs.
