Leonardo Brito de Almeida, MD

My name is Leonardo (Leo) Almeida, MD, and I am a board-certified neurologist. I am a clinical associate professor in the University of Florida Department of Neurology with a subspecialty in movement disorders.

I completed my medical training in 2008 at the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Brazil and my neurology residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2014. Following residency, I joined UF to pursue a movement disorders fellowship from 2014 to 2016. After completing the fellowship, I joined UF as a clinical assistant professor of neurology.

In 2022, I moved to the University of Minnesota, where I served as division chief of movement disorders. I returned to UF in 2026 as the co-director of the Neuromodulation Program at the UF Health Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases.

In clinical practice, I treat individuals with a range of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia and Tourette syndrome. A significant part of my clinical time is dedicated to advanced therapies, including the management of deep brain stimulation, or DBS, and subcutaneous levodopa pumps. I am part of a core faculty that covers intraoperative brain mapping during DBS electrode implantation, participates in outpatient programming and focuses on troubleshooting complex DBS cases.

I am also a clinical researcher investigating the mechanisms underlying conditions treated with DBS, with a focus on imaging, connectivity, and physiology. I have participated in multiple investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials.

During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, watching movies, playing games and traveling.
