Matthew Turtzo, MD, FACS : Bio and credentials

Prior to becoming a surgeon, I was a high school wrestling coach and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor until I was critically injured by a drunk driver. Following my recovery, I embarked on the long journey to become a trauma surgeon so I could have the privilege of caring for critically injured patients in their most desperate hour.

I currently serve on the UF Health Trauma Surgery Team at Halifax Health where I practice general surgery, surgical critical care, and trauma surgery. I hold board certifications in general surgery and surgical critical care, and I am a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. I received my medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and completed my general surgery residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Following residency, I completed a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Prior to joining UF Health, I worked at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where I was an assistant professor of surgery at Florida State University College of Medicine.

My passion is delivering the highest quality of medical care for critically injured patients in and out of the operating room. Surgically, I in highly interested in thoracic trauma as well as minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Outside of the hospital, most of my time is spent with my wife and children. Additionally, I am an avid golfer, guitarist, and snow skier with a strong interest in ancient civilizations and texts.
