Nashmil Hashemi

Hello, my name is Dr. Nashmil Hashemi, a cardiologist here at UF Health. I am originally from Sweden, where I studied in the Department of Molecular Biology at Uppsala University and attended medical school at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, the home of the Nobel Prize.

I believe deeply in centering my work around each patient’s needs and preferences. I strive to listen actively and understand each person’s individual concerns, making sure they feel heard and valued. I’m passionate about providing evidence-based care rooted in the latest research, while also tailoring my approach to each patient, recognizing that even within standardized practices, every patient has unique needs.

My research focuses on valvular heart disease, particularly advancing our understanding of disease progression and improving treatment strategies. I aim to contribute to research that identifies early intervention methods and optimizes patient outcomes, as this area offers the potential to significantly enhance quality of life through innovative approaches in both diagnosis and treatment.

With board certification in transesophageal echocardiography from the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging and extensive training in stress echocardiography, I provide personalized, state-of-the-art cardiac care.

My desire to help others, combined with a deep curiosity about the human body’s functions at both cellular and organ levels, inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I earned my medical degree from Karolinska Institutet and developed a strong interest in the heart, which I view as one of the most remarkable and efficient pumps in the world. I completed my residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology and cardiac imaging at Danderyd University Hospital in Stockholm.

As the head of the section for valvular heart disease at Danderyd University Hospital, I led a team dedicated to advancing heart health through specialized diagnostics and innovative treatments. Through my work as the fellowship director of cardiac imaging, I helped shape the education of future cardiologists by incorporating the latest, evidence-based imaging techniques. Teaching has been a central part of my career for more than 15 years, and I am committed to training fellows, residents and medical students in a way that emphasizes understanding each patient’s unique needs—a value that is at the heart of my approach to care.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, who keep me grounded and motivated. My family and my work in cardiology are both incredibly important to me, inspiring me to grow continually as both a clinician and researcher. In my free time, I also love cooking, reading, traveling and playing tennis.
