My bio
My name is Dr. Nicholas A. Smith, and I am an assistant professor in the UF College of Medicine Department of Community Health and Family Medicine. I serve on the core faculty for the sports medicine track for the Family Medicine Residency Program at UF Health Family Medicine – Main Street, and I hold a dual appointment in the UF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine.
I specialize in family medicine and sports medicine, and I am double-board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. I earned my doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine with honors, completed an internship at Michigan State University and a residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Riverside Family Medicine. I then completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine. My research interests encompass musculoskeletal ultrasound, regenerative medicine, and sports-related concussion.
As a sports medicine specialist, I provide the full spectrum of preventive and therapeutic care, but focus primarily on the non-operative management of musculoskeletal injuries – such as sprains, fractures, tendinopathy, overuse injury and osteoarthritis. I also treat sports-related concussions, provide exercise prescriptions to achieve specific health and fitness goals, and offer injection therapies to facilitate the healing of soft tissue injuries. I work with my patients to collaboratively establish an individualized, patient-centered approach to help them achieve their health and sports performance goals.
Outside of work, I have been a ringside physician for USA Boxing and I am dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients in Gainesville and the surrounding community. I am a native of Norfolk, Virginia, and I enjoy spending time with family and friends and attending concerts, festivals, amusement parks and automobile races. I also enjoy being outdoors and visiting state and national parks and sites of historical significance.
