Patrick W Underwood, MD : Bio and credentials
Cancer Specialist (Oncologist), Surgical Oncologist (Surgical Specialist - Cancer)
My bio
Hi, I’m Dr. Patrick Underwood and I’m an Assistant Professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. My clinical practice focuses on cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver, and bile duct, with a particular interest in robotic approaches to pancreas and liver surgery.
I earned my medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, then completed general surgery training and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Florida. I went on to complete advanced fellowship training in Complex General Surgical Oncology at The Ohio State University, where I also received subspecialty certification in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery.
My research focuses on patient-reported outcomes in cancer care. I’m especially interested in improving patient-specific communication around diagnosis and prognosis, strengthening informed consent, helping patients better understand complex procedures and potential complications, and exploring the lived experience of cancer. I’m also passionate about surgical education and currently serve as Associate Program Director for the UF General Surgery Residency Program.
I’m board certified by the American Board of Surgery and an active member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Association for Surgical Education.
