About me

Hi, I'm Richard Hutchison, MD, I am a hand surgeon at UF Health in the University of Florida Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. I am board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and subspecialized in hand surgery. I've dedicated my career to helping people regain hand function and return to their favorite activities. My clinical focus encompasses the full spectrum of hand-related conditions and treatments including bone fracture repair, pediatric and congenital hand conditions, trigger finger, nerve injuries, nerve compression including carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome, upper extremity injuries including wound, frost bite, minor burns, tendon injuries, arthritis, masses, cysts, skin lesions, infections and vascular issues.

I received a bachelors degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, followed by earning my medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. I did a general surgery residency and was also a research fellow at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I then went to the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey to finish out my general surgery residency. I decided to further specialize and completed a plastic surgery residency at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis and a hand surgery fellowship at Integris Health Baptist Medical Center at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. More recently I received a graduate certificate in clinical research from the University of Missouri Kansas City and a masters degree in data science from New College of Florida in Sarasota, Florida.

My desire to help people return to live their full lives is what inspired me to pursue medicine. My goal is actually help improve the use of my patients hands, and often times I prefer to do that without surgical intervention if possible. I value open communication and collaborative decision-making, working together for the best possible outcomes tailored to your needs.

My research interests lie in hand biomechanics, the diagnosis of hand problems, data science and the integration of AI to aid in understanding and treating hand-related issues. I'm driven by a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.

Beyond my professional life, I enjoy spending time jogging and boating, appreciating open spaces and the Florida sunshine. As noted by my education, I also appreciate continually learning new things.
