About me

My name is Thais Cabral de Melo Viana, MD, and I am a gastroenterologist and clinical assistant professor of medicine in the University of Florida Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition. I earned my medical degree and completed my residency in internal medicine at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Brazil, a leading public academic medical center. I then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine — the largest and one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Latin America — followed by an additional fellowship year in endoscopy at the same institution.

Training in these high-volume academic centers provided me with extensive experience in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy, including procedures such as endoscopic mucosal resection, dilation of luminal strictures and management of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Before joining UF, I practiced in both inpatient and outpatient settings in Brazil, holding clinical roles in oncology-focused care, emergency gastroenterology and high-volume endoscopic procedures, as well as administrative and leadership responsibilities. I manage a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders, including celiac disease, achalasia, eosinophilic esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus and functional bowel disorders, with particular interest in oncologic endoscopy and the care of patients with complex gastrointestinal diseases.
