Description

Title Chemical Signaling in Tritrophic Plant-Insect Interactions

Presented by James H. Tumlinson, Ph.D. Ralph O. Mumma Professor of Entomology Director, Center for Chemical Ecology Penn State University

Dr. Tumlinson is an internationally known organic chemist and member of the US National Academy of Science who studies chemicals that affect insect behavior in biological and agricultural systems. He has identified many insect pheromones and other semiochemicals, investigated the biochemical mechanisms by which chemical signals are produced, and studied the behavioral respones of insects to these cues. More recently he is investigating the chemical interactions among herbivorous insects, their host plants, and their natural enemies. This fundamental knowledge provides a basis for environmentally safe pest management as well as the control of disease vector insects.
