About me

My name is John Smulian, MD, and I am the B.L. Stalnaker professor and chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. I am board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal and fetal medicine.

I received my bachelor’s degree in natural science from Johns Hopkins University, then attended Tulane University, where I achieved both my medical degree and master’s in public health. Following graduation, I completed my residency with the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University before completing a fellowship in the division of maternal and fetal medicine at the University of Connecticut.

Along with my clinical practice, I have extensive experience in the academic realm, training a new generation of medical students as a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at a variety of medical schools across the United States. I have received numerous teaching awards and professional recognitions over my career, including the 2017 Physician of the Year by the March of Dimes, Northeast Pennsylvania Market and have been recognized consistently with Top Doctor recognitions in Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey over the past 30 years.

My research interests include prenatal diagnosis, perinatal ultrasound, fetal growth and development, maternal hypertensive disorders, maternal disorders of collagen and connective tissues, complications of the placenta, risk assessment, population health and perinatal quality measures. I have published over 180 peer-reviewed manuscripts along with multiple other publications, including book chapters and invited articles.

As a physician, I have a strong interest in providing the highest-quality clinical care in all aspects of women’s health. I have led the development of highly successful condition-specific care programs for pregnancy that focus on conditions that affect the health of both mothers and babies. Additionally, I have been instrumental in the development of regional care networks for all aspects of Women's Health Care for both maternal fetal health and gynecologic health.

During my free time, I enjoy gardening, kayaking, fly fishing, playing mandolin and cooking.

My areas of focus

I highly value a patient-centered approach to pregnancy care, especially for pregnancies that have a higher chance of complications. It is very rewarding to ease anxiety and reassure parents worried about possible problems with their pregnancy when things are going well. It is equally rewarding to help parents navigate the challenges of coping with a pregnancy that is not progressing as expected due to complications. Shared decision-making is a central part of providing high quality and appropriate care to improve health outcomes, regardless of the situation. I love what I do!
