About me

Dr. Holtzman is a graduate of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He went on to complete a traditional internship at Crozer Health System in Philadelphia, PA, and emergency medicine residency at the York Hospital/Penn State University Hershey Medical Center program. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in law enforcement emergency medical services at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, where he subsequently practiced as faculty. Dr. Holtzman served for 11 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve at fleet hospital and later several USMC detachments. He ascended to the rank of Lieutenant Commander before receiving an honorable discharge in 2012. Dr. Holtzman is board certified by ABEM in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services.

Following fellowship at JHU, Dr. Holtzman relocated to Florida, where he became an assistant professor and subsequently associate medical director of the UF Department of Emergency Medicine. While at UF, he participated as core faculty in establishing the emergency medicine residency and fellowships at UF’s main campus, served as departmental trauma liaison, as well as the medical director of the North Central Florida Trauma Agency, and contributed to the planning and construction of the $400 million south tower emergency center.

Dr. Holtzman’s background includes more than three decades in EMS, and encompasses unique experiences across a range of tactical and operational theaters. He developed a program of tactical medical support and served as the tactical medical director for local city and county SWAT teams, as well as a physician for the space shuttle program Manned Spaceflight Medical Support Team at NASA. Dr. Holtzman has traveled extensively throughout the world with the US Secret Service in support of special protective details and with other federal agencies in support of their respective missions. He served for three years as medical director of the ATF special response teams nationwide, providing education and hands on operational support.

Currently, Dr. Holtzman is the Physician Director of Quality for the adult emergency department, serves as trauma program quality liaison, manages the bloodborne safety program, and is involved in several quality endeavors related to trauma, stroke, behavioral health, and sepsis. He sits regionally on the Drug Endangered Children Task Force and is a member of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians EMS/Trauma group. Locally, Dr. Holtzman is a Deputy Sheriff with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Patrol Division and is assigned to the Special Weapons and Tactics unit where he variously provides uniformed and tactical support of routine patrol functions, special details, and high risk warrant and hostage rescue operations.
