Neuro Intensive Care Unit

UF Health Shands Gainesville Neuro ICUUF Health Shands Hospital Neuro Intensive Care Unit consists of 30-beds dedicated to the treatment of neuroscience patients who require intensive medical and surgical management. These patients receive their care from board-certified neurosurgeons, endovascular neurosurgeons, neuro-intensivists, epileptologists, neuroradiologists, vascular neurologists and neurocritical care nurses.

Under the leadership of Medical Director William A. Friedman, MD, staff members collaborate within a multidisciplinary team that also includes:

  • Case managers
  • Clinical pharmacists
  • Clinical nutritionists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Physical therapists
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Speech therapists
  • Social workers and psychiatrists


The resources offered to patients in this critical care setting include:

  • Highly specialized physician care expertise in neurosurgery, endovascular neurosurgery, vascular, neurology, critical care medicine, epileptology and neuroradiology
  • Specialized nursing services with highly-trained nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants with dedicated neurocritical care backgrounds
  • Neuro-specialized ancillary healthcare providers including critical care pharmacists, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, EEG technicians, respiratory therapists and neuroradiology technicians
  • 30 single-bed private patient rooms with full ICU monitoring capabilities, observation window and secure patient-specific supply cabinets 
  • Dedicated neuro ICU CT scanner with contrast, CT-angiogram and CTA/CT perfusion on a 320-slice scanner 
  • Fully integrated long-term EEG monitoring capability for every bed
  • Development of an e-ICU with electronic records, ordering, remote monitoring, radiology, and lab
