Steinberg appointed to national position

Dr. Barry Steinberg, associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and diagnostic sciences at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, has been appointed to the executive council of the American Cleft Palate - Craniofacial Association. Steinberg, who also is an associate dean for hospital affairs at UF's Health Science Center in Jacksonville and director of the Jacksonville Lorenz Center for Pediatric Facial Disorders, will serve as a council member for three years. The executive council is part of the association's governing body.

The association is a nonprofit organization involved with the treatment and research of children born with birth defects related to cleft lip, cleft palate and other craniofacial deformities. Cleft lip and cleft palate are the fourth most frequently occurring birth defects in the United States. Each year, more than 5,000 babies are born with these congenital conditions.

In existence for more than 50 years, the American Cleft Palate - Craniofacial Association has 2,600 individuals involved in treatment and research in 40 countries.

Steinberg previously served as a section editor for the organization's bi-monthly publication, the Cleft Palate – Craniofacial Journal.
