UF obstetrics and gynecology resident recognized for outstanding research

Dr. Martina Reiss, a third-year obstetrics and gynecology resident at the University of Florida College of Medicine, recently was honored for her research on infectious diseases.

At the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ annual clinical meeting in late May, Reiss received the Merck/ACOG Young Investigator’s Award for Infectious Diseases. The award is for the best new research on infectious diseases presented by a resident at the national convention, which was held this year in San Francisco. She received a certificate and a $1,500 prize.

Reiss evaluated the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis, a type of vaginal infection, in an indigent, rural prenatal population and also determined that it was not linked to increased risk for urinary tract and yeast infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

With a membership of 40,000 physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is the nation's leading group of professionals providing health care for women.
