UF cancer scientist awarded research honor

University of Florida cancer researcher Satya Narayan, Ph.D., has received the 2001 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award. The awards program, run by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, provides seed money for research by junior faculty at its member institutions. Narayan received an unrestricted $5,000 research award, which the UF College of Medicine will match.

Narayan, an assistant professor of anatomy and cell biology who is affiliated with the UF Shands Cancer Center, was selected from among 49 applicants. His research focuses on colorectal cancer. His long-term goal is to understand its molecular mechanisms and then use the knowledge to develop appropriate chemotherapy and gene therapy approaches to treat it.

Established in 1946, Oak Ridge Associated Universities is a multi-university consortium that operates the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Education, administers National Science Foundation graduate fellowships and conducts other science and engineering educational programs.

The UF Shands Cancer Center is an interdisciplinary initiative connecting clinical and basic researchers at the UF Health Science Center’s Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses, Shands at UF and Shands Jacksonville who perform original scientific research and enhance clinical strategies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.
