UF faculty lauded for radiosurgery advances

Two University of Florida faculty members who have made lasting contributions to the field of radiosurgery have been honored by the International Radiosurgery Society. William A. Friedman, M.D., and Frank J. Bova, Ph.D., received the organization’s Fabrikant Award, designed to recognize outstanding achievements in the field. The award was presented in June at the organization’s meeting in Las Vegas. Friedman, the A. L. Rhoton professor and chairman of the College of Medicine’s department of neurosurgery, and Bova, the A.E and B.W. Einstein professor of neurosurgery and staff physicist, invented the LINAC Scalpel in 1986. The noninvasive system, now in use at more than 70 medical centers worldwide, employs computer modeling of patients’ brains to precisely target radiation to brain tumors and other brain lesions. Bova and Friedman are affiliated with the Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain Institute of UF.
