UF medical student’s painting printed in JAMA

Zofia Nowicki’s “Rome at Dusk,” an oil on canvas, has appeared in the medical student section of a recent issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. Nowicki, a third-year medical student at the University of Florida College of Medicine, has been painting and drawing since she was a young girl.

In her portraits, Nowicki strives to capture a subject’s personality as well as likeness, and, she says, she often expresses herself with landscapes, which are her reflections on the beauty of nature.

The journal prints the section, Medical Student JAMA, from September through May to provide a forum for critical exchange on current issues in medical education, research and practice. Artwork by a medical student is featured in each issue. The section is produced by a group of medical student editors in collaboration with the journal’s editorial staff. Nowicki’s painting appeared in the Oct. 3 issue.

Nowicki has won various painting awards, including first place at the Winter Park Art Festival, and best of show at the Maitland Art and the Orlando Street Painting festivals. Her work is permanently on display in the Orlando area at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children, SunTrust Bank in the downtown district and Rollins College.

Born in Poland, Nowicki describes her family as artistic and medical. She says she enjoys balancing art and science and plans to continue to paint throughout her medical career, drawing inspiration from it.
