UF physician receives top academic radiologist fellowship

A University of Florida College of Medicine physician recently received a prestigious radiology fellowship.

Christopher L. Sistrom, M.D., an assistant professor in the department of radiology, was selected in July by General Electric and the Association of University Radiologists as one of four new inductees into the GE-AUR Radiology Research Academic Fellowship program.

The fellowship will provide Sistrom with a two-year, $130,000 grant to support his research concerning the content, format and usage of radiological reports. Sistrom, who is completing a master’s degree in public health, plans on continuing his studies in a doctoral progam in health services research. He will examine the efficiency and accuracy of medical personnel in obtaining vital information from radiological reports in different formats. This will help in developing standards for report structure and content, potentially reducing medical errors and improving patient care.

A primary factor for Sistrom’s selection was his involvement in the National Institutes of Health-sponsored advanced postgraduate program in clinical investigation at UF. Sistrom receives funding for graduate school tuition as part of this program, which is supported by a five-year, multi-institutional, $1 million grant awarded in 1998.

Marian Limacher, M.D, a professor of medicine and cardiology, directs UF’s program.
