UF researcher receives national honors for article

Christopher E. Johnson, an assistant professor in the College of Health Professions’ department of health services administration, has received a national award for the article he co-wrote on the effects that various payment methods have on the price of medical care in clinical practices.

Johnson, along with six co-authors, received the article of the year award from the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy during the association’s annual in June. The award recognizes leading scientific work in the field of health services research.

The researchers evaluated the complex effects on cost of care when health professionals are paid on a fee-for-service basis, modified versions of fee-for-service or through “capitation” plans, in which insurers pay providers a per-patient fee to deliver care. Among their findings was that costs were reduced in capitation and modified fee-for-service plans.

The authors also won the National Institute for Health Care Management Research and Educational Foundation’s Seventh Annual Research Award in November.
