UF Shands Cancer Center named to nationwide association of cancer institutes

The University of Florida Shands Cancer Center has been named to the Association of American Cancer Institutes, an organization of the United States’ leading academic and free-standing cancer centers dedicated to cancer research, treatment, prevention, early diagnosis and education.

Established in 1959, the association was among the first to realize the benefits of forming a network of cancer institutes, physicians and scientists to integrate diverse research and clinical approaches in the fight against cancer.

The more than 80 AACI institutions serve as headquarters for most of the nation’s cooperative clinical trials groups. These centers are the hubs of critical discoveries, treatment advances, improvements in patient care and changes in legislative policy.

The UF Shands Cancer Center is a campuswide program consisting of basic scientists and physicians at the UF Health Science Center’s Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses who are exploring many promising avenues of cancer detection and treatment.
