Carney named UF pediatric neurology division chief
Paul Carney, M.D., has been named chief of the division of pediatric neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
Carney, an assistant professor of pediatrics, neurology and neuroscience, succeeds Bernard Maria, M.D., M.B.A., who served as division chief for 11 years before joining the University of Missouri School of Medicine as chairman of the department of child health in 2001.
As division chief, Carney plans to strengthen clinical and research collaborations with UF institutes and academic departments, expand general pediatric patient services and pediatric neurology research efforts, and increase related funding. These activities help support the mission of Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida and are funded in part by the Children’s Miracle Network.
Carney’s research focuses on seizure prediction and prevention strategies. He is part of a team developing a device that will monitor brain activity to predict when a seizure is likely to occur. He also plans to expand UF’s pediatric epilepsy program, which he directs.
A member of the UF faculty since 1998, Carney earned his medical degree from University of Valparaiso School of Medicine in 1990. He completed residency training in pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital of Cleveland. He received subspecialty training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
