Dog Owners Symposium is July 27

The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine’s sixth annual Dog Owners and Breeders Symposium will open July 27 at 8 a.m. at the J. Wayne Reitz Union on UF’s campus.

This one-day symposium will offer dog enthusiasts information about the latest issues and trends in canine health and disease.

Some of the nation’s leading veterinary specialists will share information on the emerging threat of tick-borne diseases, and provide updates on cancer treatment and how to handle neurological emergencies. Discussions about ear disease, canine physical therapy and steps to breeding better dogs also will be on the agenda.

An advanced reproduction symposium will be held in the afternoon, as well as a seminar on practical first aid for pets.

The second annual “K-9 Down: Are You Prepared?” emergency medical services symposium will be held all day in conjunction with the conference. That symposium requires separate registration and will address triage, transport, heat stroke, snakebites, and how to handle situations involving smoke inhalation or burns.

The program will conclude with a tour of the UF Small Animal Hospital and an “Entrees and Expertise” dinner, at which participants can ask questions and chat with UF veterinary faculty members.

The registration fee before July 16 for the symposium only is $69 or $110 with Entrees in Expertise. After July 16, the registration fee is $79 or $120 with Entrees in Expertise. Attendance is limited so early registration is advised.
