Gregg honored by peers as Nurse of the Year
University of Florida College of Nursing faculty member Andrea Gregg, D.S.N., R.N., has been named Nurse of the Year by District II of the Florida Nurses Association.
Gregg, an assistant professor and director of the college’s Jacksonville campus, was given the award at the organization’s 20th Annual Nursing Awards Forum, which took place at the culmination of National Nurses Week in May.
The award, the forum’s highest honor, is based on overall excellence and recognizes the nurse who stands out as a community leader and innovator, promotes a positive image of nursing in all areas, and contributes to the community and the profession of nursing. The winner is chosen by a “blue ribbon” committee of approximately 30 former honorees.
Gregg, who has practiced as a registered nurse for 35 years both in clinical and administrative roles, was appointed director of the college’s Jacksonville campus in 1995. Since her appointment, she has worked collaboratively to establish and maintain a distance-learning program where graduate nurses can attend classes and complete courses in Jacksonville. In 1999, she worked with the College of Nursing faculty to facilitate distance delivery of the UF Ph.D. nursing program in Jacksonville.
Her faculty colleagues elected Gregg president of the Faculty Organization in 1999. During her two-year term, she enhanced faculty decision-making and self-governance.
In addition, Gregg has served as an elected officer on numerous professional and community boards, including the Florida Nurses Foundation, the Florida League for Nursing and the Child Guidance Center. She has worked closely with other state organizations to lobby the legislature for increased funding for nursing workforce solutions and nursing education.
“Dr. Gregg brings a background in both nursing education and nursing administration to her role in the college,” said Kathleen Ann Long, R.N., Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing. “She is an active and outspoken advocate for excellence in both arenas.”
