Pharmacy professor Hendeles wins national honor for distinguished achievement in research

College of Pharmacy professor Leslie Hendeles, Pharm.D., has won the 2001 American Pharmaceutical Association Research Achievement Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Clinical Sciences).

Hendeles has made sustained contributions to pharmacy and medical literature for over 30 years. He is best known for research aimed at optimizing the use of existing drugs for the treatment of asthma, and improving methods for delivering these drugs to patients. In many cases, he identifies clinical problems with medications and designs research studies to solve them.

Hendeles has published many original clinical research studies and review articles for major journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, the American Review of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He also has written textbook chapters. His publications focus mainly on pediatric patients and on the pharmacotherapy of asthma.

“I don’t see the award as a personal one but as a recognition for the team of people who have worked under the moniker of the Asthma Research Lab during the last 18 years,” Hendeles said.

Hendeles joins three UF pharmacy faculty members who have won this prestigious award: Edward Garrett (1963), Nicholas Bodor (1989) and C. Douglas Hepler (1991).

Hendeles received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Southern California. He was recognized as one of their outstanding alumnus in 1993.
