Stacpoole named fellow of prestigious medical organization
Peter W. Stacpoole, Ph.D., M.D., a professor of medicine, biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine, has been elected a distinguished fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, an international organization promoting the highest standards of medical practice.
Stacpoole was chosen for his leadership in patient-oriented research and medical education extending over 20 years. He attended a summer induction ceremony in London and received a diploma. Fellows are senior members of the medical profession who usually work in university departments of medicine.
Stacpoole directs the National Institutes of Health-funded General Clinical Research Center at UF. Throughout his career, he has studied lactic acidosis and other life-threatening metabolic disorders. Several of his research projects have examined the use of the synthetic compound dichloroacetate (DCA) as a treatment for metabolic diseases. He joined the UF medical faculty in 1980.
