UF’s Mazzaferri receives endocrinology award

University of Florida thyroid cancer specialist Ernest Mazzaferri, M.D., M.A.C.P., has received the Distinguished Clinician Award from the American College of Endocrinology.

The award was presented May 4 at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists’ eleventh annual meeting, held in Chicago. Mazzaferri, a professor of medicine in UF’s College of Medicine, was one of two honorees given the award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to clinical endocrinology.

He is best known for his ongoing studies of thyroid cancer patients, which have been in progress for 30 years. His latest research involves long-term follow-up after surgery, using recombinant human thyroid stimulating hormone to aid early detection of residual tumors. The hormone causes tumors to secrete thyroglobulin, a marker for the disease.

Mazzaferri arrived at UF last year after retiring from The Ohio State University, where he had been chairman of internal medicine for 16 years. He is a member of the UF Shands Cancer Center and directs the thyroid clinic at the Jerry W. and Judith S. Davis Cancer Center ambulatory building.
