UF nurse-midwife honored with teaching award

University of Florida nurse-midwife Jane Gannon, C.N.M., R.N., has been awarded the American College of Nursing Midwives Foundation 2002 Excellence in Teaching Award.

Gannon, a clinical assistant professor in the UF College of Nursing’s nurse-midwifery program in Jacksonville, was honored in May at the organization’s annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga. The foundation honors one teacher in every ACNM education program each year who teaches, mentors and serves as a role model for midwifery students.

Gannon was selected by her students because of her demonstrated excellence in academic and clinical education, her contribution to a positive learning environment, her support and enhancement of basic and lifelong learning skills and her support of the highest standards of midwifery practice.

“Jane is a seasoned teacher and nurse-midwife,” said Andrea Gregg, D.S.N., R.N., director of the college’s Jacksonville campus. “She spends much time up front preparing for the courses she teaches, including reviewing the most current published literature and supplementary Web sites. Jane is versed in Web technology and pushes the envelope of traditional teaching methods by introducing a variety of Web enhancements to her courses.”

Gannon has been at UF’s Jacksonville campus since 2000 and previously served as a clinical faculty member at both The Ohio State University and the University of Vermont. She is an active member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the American Public Health Association. In addition, she has worked on a number of creative projects linking health care and Web technology, including the Web sites for the Ohio Nurse-Midwives and the University of Vermont College of Medicine’s department of obstetrics and gynecology.
