UF student receives national physical therapy research award

A recent graduate of the University of Florida has received a national award for her doctoral thesis in spinal cord injury.

Sheryl Flynn, Ph.D., a physical therapist and former student in the College of Health Professions' physical therapy department and the College of Health and Human Performances' department of exercise and sport sciences, received the Post-professional Student Research Award from the neurology section of the American Physical Therapy Association at the association's annual meeting in Boston.

The award recognizes innovative research for rehabilitation of people with nervous system damage. In her research, Flynn examined the use of a treadmill to promote recovery of walking after spinal cord injury. Her research was conducted under the mentorship of Andrea Behrman, Ph.D., P.T., associate professor, physical therapy; James Cauraugh, Ph.D., associate professor, exercise and sport sciences; and Floyd Thompson, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Medicine's neuroscience department.

Flynn currently is pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship in the UF department of neuroscience at the Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain Institute of UF.
