Visiting scientists to lecture at Health Science Center
The chair of the department of medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University will be the first of three experts to lecture at the University of Florida Health Science Center during November and December as part of the UF General Clinical Research Center’s visiting-scientist program.
Professor Donald Lynn Loriaux, M.D., Ph.D., will lead a discussion of Cushing’s Syndrome from 11 a.m. to noon, Nov. 14, in Room C1-11 of the Communicore Building. In addition, Loriaux, who also is chief of the division of endocrinology, diabetes and clinical nutrition at the Oregon school, will discuss “Clinical Investigation and the Model of Fuller Albright” during a meeting of the Alachua County Endocrine Society at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 14, at Steve’s Café Americain. His visit is sponsored by the research center and Shands at UF medical center.
Next in the visiting-scientist series will be Francois M. Abboud, M.D., who is the Edith King Pearson professor of cardiovascular research and director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Iowa. A professor of medicine and of physiology and biophysics, Abboud will discuss “Molecular Mechanisms of Baroreceptor Activation” during medical grand rounds from 11 a.m. to noon, Dec. 5, in Room C1-11 of the Communicore Building. A research seminar is set for 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room R4-265 of the Academic Research Building. His visit is sponsored by the research center and the Advanced Postgraduate Program in Clinical Investigation.
The final visiting scientist will be William A. Gahl, M.D., Ph.D., from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. Chief of Human Biochemical Genetics at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Gahl will discuss “The Hermansky-Pudlak Syndromes: Disorders of Vesicle Formation” from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 12, in Room R4-265 of the Academic Research Building. He will lead a discussion on cystinosis from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Dec. 13, in Room C1-9 of the Communicore Building. Gahl’s visit also is sponsored by UF’s Genetic Institute.
