Weeklong lecture series to focus on pain
Internationally known pain experts will begin a weeklong discussion of topical pain issues beginning Monday, Nov. 18, during a luncheon series presented by the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System Pain Education Committee.
The series will conclude Friday, Nov. 22, with a luncheon featuring local faculty and staff from the Malcom Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Luncheon lectures will be from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. each day in the VA Medical Center auditorium with live video-teleconferencing throughout Southern Georgia, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Keela H. Herr, Ph.D., R.N., from the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa, will discuss “End of Life Pain Management in Older Adults” and “Assessment and Management of Chronic Pain in Older Adults” on Monday.
Mathew Lefkowitz, M.D., director of New York Methodist’s Pain Management Center, will discuss “Efficacy of Clinical Cancer Pain Management” and “Chronic Back Pain/Degenerative Joint Disease – Management Impacting Clinical Practice” on Tuesday.
Two speakers will be featured Wednesday. Donald D. Price, Ph.D., a UF neuroscience professor, will present “The Placebo Effect,” and Phillip P. Toskes, M.D., a professor of medicine at UF’s College of Medicine, will discuss visceral pain.
R. Sean Morrison, M.D., an associate professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the research director of the Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute, will present two topics, “Institutional Interventions to Improve Pain Management” and “Pain and Suffering in Advanced Dementia,” on Thursday.
A special luncheon program from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Friday will feature local faculty and staff from the VA Medical Center, including Jerry Berger, M.D.; David Brushwood, J.D., R.Ph.; Roger B. Fillingim, Ph.D.; Henry A. Gremillion, D.D.S.; and Roland Staud, M.D.
Clinical staff may attend any of the lectures. The program is made possible through an educational grant from Johnson & Johnson companies that include Janssen Pharmaceutica Inc., Ortho Biotech – Oncology and Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Inc.
