Breast pathologist Shahla Masood will lead world conference on breast disease

Novel ways to help predict a breast cancer patient’s response to treatment is one of many topics guest speakers will explore at the University of Florida’s ninth annual Multidisciplinary Symposium on Breast Disease, Feb. 12-15, 2004, at Amelia Island.

The continuing education program, sponsored by the UF Health Science Center Jacksonville, will feature 20 experts in breast surgery, radiation, oncology and pathology from 15 universities in the United States and the Netherlands.

Course Director Shahla Masood, M.D., head of pathology at the UF Health Science Center Jacksonville, announced two pre-symposium workshops will be offered Feb. 12 — one on breast imaging and another on “What Every Obstetrician and Gynecologist Should Know About Breast Disease.” Masood founded the program, which attracts breast experts from around the world.

Controversies surrounding the costs and usefulness of new breast imaging technologies, including digital mammography, challenges in diagnosing borderline breast disease, and optimal approaches to caring for high-risk breast cancer patients will be among the focal points of discussion. Experts also will present new information on the treatment of bone disease and the management of menopausal symptoms in breast cancer patients.

Recent developments and future progress in breast cancer prevention will be shared at the symposium’s opening session by oncologist Thomas Julian, M.D., associate director of the Allegheny General Breast Care Center at Drexel University School of Medicine in Pittsburgh. Other cancer specialists on the program include Judy Garber, M.D., Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston; Julie Gralow, M.D., University of Washington, Seattle; Steven Harms, M.D., University of Arkansas in Little Rock; Emil Rutgers, M.D., Ph.D., The Netherlands Cancer Institute; Robert Kuske, M.D., Arizona Oncology Services in Scottsdale; and Jenny Chang, M.D., Baylor College of Medicine, Houston.

UF faculty participants will include William Cance, M.D., a professor and chairman of surgery; Edward Copeland III, M.D., a professor emeritus of surgery; Andrew Kaunitz, M.D., a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the College of Medicine in Jacksonville; and Masood, a professor and associate chairwoman of pathology and laboratory medicine.

Breast cancer survivor Gwen Darien, publisher and editor-in-chief of MAMM Magazine in New York City, will give a closing talk on “What a Breast Cancer Patient Wants to Know.”

The Multidisciplinary Symposium on Breast Disease is sponsored in cooperation with the UF Shands Cancer Center, the Breast Health Center at Shands Jacksonville and the Breast Journal, and in association with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Register online at http://cme.ufl.edu.
