Carl M. Feldherr, Ph.D., professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology

Carl M. Feldherr, Ph.D., retiring after 36 years at UF, has devoted his career to researching the structure and function of the nuclear envelope, a membrane complex that surrounds cell nuclei. The nuclear envelope helps regulate the passage of proteins and ribonucleic acid (RNA) between the cell nucleus and the cytoplasm surrounding the nucleus.

Besides teaching medical and dental histology, Feldherr organized and directed the College of Medicine’s graduate courses on cell division, membrane biology, and cell and tissue biology. He received the college’s Faculty Research Prize in Basic Science in 1998 and has held the Haskell Hess Professorship in Anatomy and Cell Biology since 1993.

Feldherr will remain at UF as a professor emeritus and looks forward to devoting more time to travel, scuba diving, underwater photography and reading.
