Lois Malasanos, Ph.D., R.N., distinguished service professor

Lois Malasanos, Ph.D., R.N., served as dean of the College of Nursing from 1980 to 1994, then as a distinguished service professor. During Malasanos’ tenure as dean, the college strengthened its involvement in research, expanded its master’s degree program from five to 13 specialties and implemented Florida’s first doctoral program in nursing. Malasanos led the college in establishing satellite campuses in Jacksonville and Orlando and increasing the number of faculty from 42 to more than 70. During her tenure, faculty became involved in the staffing of primary care clinics that provide care to elderly inner-city residents and low-income populations in rural areas of Alachua and Marion counties.

“I will miss the privilege of interacting with outstanding faculty, as well as students handpicked for their intellect,” Malasanos said. “My hopes for the college is that it continues to attract the best and brightest, to develop good friends for the college to extend opportunities for student experience and support.”

Malasanos’ future plans include writing and consultation.
