UF pathology team to edit prestigious journal

A team of University of Florida College of Medicine pathologists has been selected to edit the surgical pathology research journal Laboratory Investigation for a five-year term.

Selected from a field of 12 academic pathology groups vying for the position, the UF team assumed editing duties in July; their first issue appears in January, said James Crawford, M.D., Ph.D., a UF professor and chairman of pathology, immunology and laboratory medicine who serves as the journal’s editor-in-chief.

Assisting Crawford are Associate Professor Anthony Yachnis, M.D., as senior associate editor, and Professor Raul Braylan, M.D., Professor Michael Clare-Salzler, M.D., Assistant Professor Laurence Morel, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Naohiro Terada, M.D., Ph.D., as associate editors. Catherine Ketcham, Ph.D., a coordinator of information and publication services for the department, serves as managing editor.

Laboratory Investigation is one of two journals published by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, a leading North American pathology organization with more than 9,000 members.

“(Our) vision for the journal is to be that place where molecular research and structural pathology meet, to advance understanding of disease pathogenesis,” Crawford said. “We’re also taking steps to enhance the appeal of the journal to the rank-and-file membership, which is by and large practicing surgical pathologists…. In essence, the idea is to bring to the clinical practice setting critical information they need to know from the research world.”
