University of Florida dairy veterinarian receives Fulbright fellowship to Argentina

Carlos Risco, D.V.M., a professor of large animal clinical sciences at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, has received a three-month Fulbright grant to further his research into postpartum problems of dairy cows in Argentina.

Risco will work with Luzbel de la Sota, Ph.D., who teaches cattle reproduction at the Universidad de la Plata. He will focus on postpartum disorders affecting dairy cows and on management strategies that minimize the need for hormone and antibiotic treatments, which can be very expensive for cattle producers.

In addition to teaching veterinary students at the Universidad de la Plata, Risco will instruct veterinary residents and graduate students.

“Dr. de la Sota is a very prolific and well respected researcher, so I expect to learn,” Risco said. “I’m hoping to continue to foster the international relationship we have and that possibly UF veterinary students can travel to La Plata at some point through some type of study program.”

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals from other countries for various educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.
