NEW GENERAL COUNSEL JOINS SHANDS


GAINESVILLE, Fla.- Shands HealthCare’s new senior vice president and general counsel stepped into his new role on Thursday, Oct. 23. James Roberts will oversee legal services and corporate compliance for Shands’ eight hospitals and outpatient programs.

Roberts had been senior vice president and general counsel for the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics since 2002. He oversaw legal affairs, trustee affairs, compliance, and professional liability and risk management.

His 26-year legal career spans healthcare general counsel positions with hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center System and of the Johns Hopkins Health System. He also held legal and strategic consulting positions with real estate, insurance brokerage and banking companies.

“Mr. Roberts has general counsel expertise with several well-respected academic healthcare systems and also corporate experience from other industries,” said Tim Goldfarb, Shands HealthCare CEO. “His experience and leadership will help us continue to navigate current economic and regulatory challenges.”

Roberts has a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Maryland and a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law.

Goldfarb added, “We have had outstanding support during this transition from Charles Koval, our associate general counsel. Mr. Roberts’ qualifications and experience will complement that of our exceptional legal services team and help guide us for the future.”
