The University of Florida Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences will offer free hearing screenings throughout the month of May in honor of national Better Hearing and Speech Month.

“This month of awareness is a good time to analyze your own hearing and determine if you are one of the estimated 28 million Americans who have a hearing loss that can be treated,” said Ryan Baker, Au.D., a clinical audiologist in the College of Public Health and Health Professions.

Signs of hearing loss may include losing your place in group conversations or background noise; frequently asking people to repeat themselves; turning your ear toward a sound to hear it better; raising the volume on your radio or TV to a level that others say is too loud; or ringing in the ears.

The free screenings will be offered the entire month of May at the UF Speech and Hearing Clinic, 1405 NW 13th St., Suites B and C. Appointments are required; please call the clinic at 352-273-0542 to schedule a time. The clinic will provide free literature and hearing protection devices to those who are screened.
