Moonlight and Martinis benefits locals with Alzheimer's disease, memory disorders
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 25, 2011) – As Valentine’s Day approaches, dancers and diners will show their support for a good cause during Moonlight and Martinis, a gala on Feb. 5 to benefit Al’z Place, a daycare facility for adults with Alzheimer’s disease and memory disorders.
Al’z Place is a program of ElderCare of Alachua County. The center provides therapy and recreational activities for people 18 and older, while also giving their caregivers a respite. It is one of only three model day care facilities in the state for people with Alzheimer’s disease and memory disorders.
The fundraiser event begins at 7 p.m. at RD Air Services, which is located north of 39th Avenue in the general aviation section of Gainesville Regional Airport.
Anthony Clarizio, ElderCare of Alachua County executive director, said the event helps Al’z Place provide client-centered programs and therapeutic opportunities that go beyond what is covered by state funding. In addition to the services for clients, Al’z Place provides caregiver support and respite. The program needs to raise at least $60,000 to overcome this year’s deficit, Clarizio said.
“We’re fortunate to have a center like this for adults in our community, and I think that we should do everything we can to maintain these valuable services,” Clarizio said.
Guests can enjoy signature martinis and food from local restaurants including Dragonfly, Napolatano’s and Cody’s Original Roadhouse. In addition to dancing and dining, guests will have the opportunity to bid on art created by Al’z Place clients and members of a program called Art without Boundaries. There will be 57 paintings in the art auction.
While $60,000 is the fundraising goal, Clarizio hopes the event will raise even more money so that Al’z Place can expand services to benefit more clients.
Individual tickets cost $75, while a table of 10 with a company display sign costs $700. Tickets can be purchased online http://moonlightandmartinis.org or by calling 352-265-9040.
