New associate vice president appointed at Shands at UF

Andrew “Drew” C. Smithson will join Shands at the University of Florida as the new associate vice president of operations on June 27, according to Edward Jimenez, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Shands at UF.

Smithson will serve as administrator for the cardiovascular services, radiation oncology, rehab services and diabetes education departments.

He recently was administrator for the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center Moffitt Medical Group in Tampa, managing operations and finances for multiple outpatient clinics.

In addition, he led efforts that improved patient satisfaction scores through environment of care, customer service and patient education and support initiatives.

He also oversaw renovation of two outpatient clinics to accommodate a projected volume growth of 30 percent for fiscal year 2011 and was involved in physician recruitment.

Previously, he was an associate administrator for the department of internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and Medical College of Virginia Physicians.

He began his career as director of operations at Baptist Medical Center-Beaches, part of Baptist Health System in Jacksonville. He holds a master’s degree in health administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and bachelor's degree in nutrition science from Texas Christian University.
