Thank you for choosing UF Health Surgical Specialists – Shands Hospital for your health care needs.

Our surgeons are faculty members at the University of Florida, expertly trained and board-certified in general surgery, colon and rectal surgery, pancreatic surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, transplantation surgery, critical care and trauma surgery. Our outpatient at UF Health Shands Hospital offers a wide array of surgical consultations and evaluations.

Abdominal transplantation

Our abdominal transplant program has over 50 years’ experience performing abdominal transplants — completing the first kidney transplant in Florida in 1966. We were also the first in Florida to perform a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant in 1995.

Our board-certified surgeons are faculty members at the University of Florida, and are expertly trained in abdominal transplantation surgery. Our outpatient practice offers a wide array of surgical consultations and evaluations to determine if you or a loved one are a candidate for a liver, kidney and pancreas transplant.

An evaluation is scheduled testing to see how advanced your disease is as well as to ensure that the rest of your body is healthy enough to manage a transplant.

With our multidisciplinary approach to care, several team members with complementary skills work together to provide you with the best care possible.

Bariatric surgery

At UF Health, our bariatric surgery team offers a comprehensive treatment approach to weight loss, allowing the surgeon to consult with a team that includes psychiatrists, nutritionists, cardiologists and other health-care providers. Each patient is different and requires a unique approach. Our team of experts will meet with you, one-on-one, to discuss the best weight loss option.

Surgical weight loss is the only proven, reliable and long-term weight loss solution for morbid obesity. When patients adhere to the necessary post-surgery behaviors, including diet and exercise, bariatric surgery is very successful. Results from surgery directly impact a person’s overall quality of life, as well as resolve many co-existing health problems.
