The purpose of the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. Pharmacist residency education and training in community-based practice aims to develop pharmacy leaders who are capable of improving the health of patients within the communities they serve. The primary purpose of this standard is to foster the development of community-based pharmacist practitioners who are community-focused practice leaders, serving as an access point for care and having the skill-set necessary to provide quality generalist patient care services wherever health and medication needs arise.

Virtual Information Sessions for the 2024-2025 residency year will take place on November 7, 2024 and November 19, 2024 from 6-8 pm EST.

Program

Residency students

This program emphasizes the development of advanced practical skills needed by community pharmacy practitioners concentrating on enhancing existing clinical services and implementing pharmacy practice programs. The experience is individualized to each resident to develop clinical, analytical, teaching, and leadership skills. The residents will work in a collaborative environment with exposure to diverse clinical specialty areas, including Specialty Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care, Transitions of Care, Administration, and multiple community pharmacies. Collaboration with providers in an integrated health system will be emphasized through trans-disciplinary care to improve patient outcomes

Other experiences include:

  • Conduct a Medication Use Evaluation
  • Assist in precepting Doctor of Pharmacy students
  • Present a platform presentation on a project at the Florida Residency Conference
  • Give two formal, ACPE-accredited presentations on a therapeutic controversy to the Department
  • Complete a research project. Projects must receive prior approval and must be in publishable form upon completion of the residency.
  • Participate on a Pharmacy Department Committee
  • Serve in a leadership role, examples include:
    • Chief Resident
    • Education Coordinator
    • Lead Recruitment Officer(s)
    • Networking Officer
    • Preceptor Development Officer
    • Research Officer
    • Scheduling Officer
    • Social Media Officer

  • Complete the UF College of Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program (optional)

Stipend

The resident receives a $52,000 stipend paid by UF Health Shands Hospital. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Eligibility requirements

  • Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school or college or pharmacy.
  • Professional License: All residents must be eligible for Florida licensure. Selected and matched residents must be licensed by August 1st.
  • Interview: An on-site or virtual interview is required.
  • Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period. We do not sponsor international visas.

  • Submit all applications through PhORCAS.
  • Final deadline for complete applications is January 2, 2025.

After completed applications have been reviewed, the residency selection committee will notify selected applicants to arrange an on-site or virtual interview. Official start date for the residency: June 30, 2025.
