The ASHP-accredited program residency in Infectious Diseases at UF Health
Shands Hospital is designed to provide specialized training in the delivery of effective antimicrobial therapy to diverse patient populations and prepare the resident for independent practice as an infectious diseases specialist. This goal is met by completing the elements of the program as listed below.

Program

Residency students

There are two Infectious Diseases resident positions available to eligible candidates. This program values unique and diverse perspectives. Please know you will be welcomed, valued, and respected as part of our program.

The goal of the 12-month program is to develop expertise in pharmaceutical, technological and stewardship activities within an 1,111-bed hospital that includes 206 Critical Care beds and practices in Bone Marrow and Organ Transplantation, Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Primary emphasis is placed on the development of clinical practice skills through direct patient care and didactic learning. Teaching opportunities are available in conjunction with the University of Florida College of Pharmacy.

  • Stewardship in an Intensive Care Unit, Stewardship in Internal Medicine, OPAT clinic

The resident will be an integral part of the health care team for each service. The resident provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care, including anti-infective pharmacotherapy consults, pharmacokinetic analysis, drug information and intensive monitoring of each patient on service. The resident participates in all aspects of service, education, and research.

Project requirement

A required project, which will directly affect Antimicrobial Stewardship activities and the practice of hospital pharmacy, will enable the resident to develop skills in clinical research, study design, and statistical analysis. Our residents are consistently successful in publishing in peer reviewed journals and national ID conference poster sessions.

Additional requirements include (but are not limited to)

  • Staffing an average of eight hours per week, including a rotation through Infectious Diseases On-Call
  • Attend bi-weekly Infectious Diseases Conferences
  • Coordinate one Anti-Infective Subcommittee meeting
  • Assist in precepting APPE students from the University of Florida
  • Assist in training PGY1 pharmacy practice residents during their Infectious Diseases rotations
  • Present a major project at the MAD-ID conference or an equivalent forum
  • Conduct one drug utilization evaluation on a topic or drug pertinent to infectious diseases
  • Make two formal presentations on a therapeutic controversy to the department

Stipend

The resident receives a $56,368 stipend paid by UF Health Shands Hospital. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year. Additional funds are available for travel to conferences.

Requirements

To be eligible for the residency in Infectious Diseases at UF Health Shands Hospital, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Academic: The applicant must have a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited school or college and a residency certificate from a pharmacy practice residency (PGY1) before enrolling in this advanced residency program.
  • Professional License: All residents must be eligible for Florida licensure. Selected and matched residents must be licensed by August 1st.
  • Interview: An on-site or virtual interview is required.
  • Non-Resident Alien Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.

  • Submit all applications through PhORCAS.
  • Final deadline for complete applications is January 2nd, 2025
  • Complete applications include:
  1. Transcript of the applicant’s grades
  2. Letter of intent
  3. Current curriculum vitae
  4. Standardized Reference Forms supplied by and filled out in PhORCAS from three (3) professional sources.
  • After completed applications have been reviewed, the residency selection committee will notify selected applicants to arrange an on-site or virtual interview.
  • Official start date for the residency: June 30, 2025
