PGY2 in Pediatrics Pharmacy Residency

The residency in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice at UF Health Shands Hospital is an ASHP-accredited program. The purpose of the residency is to prepare the resident to practice and provide quality pediatric clinical pharmacy services in an institutional setting where teaching and research are also incorporated.

Program

Pediatric pharmacy services are provided to the patients of UF Health Shands Hospital by an experienced pediatric pharmacy team. Pharmacists provide care to a wide variety of patients in the inpatient setting, including approximately 200 beds, and outpatient areas of the medical center. Pharmacy satellites are supported by pharmacy technicians and an extensive IV additive program and prepackaging service.

The pediatric medical staff from UF represent all pediatric subspecialties and attract patients from all over the Southeast, as well as from foreign countries. UF Health Shands Hospital has two general pediatric units, a dedicated pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT unit, Level IV neonatal ICU, pediatric ICU and congenital heart ICU.

The residency in pediatric pharmacy practice is comprehensive enough to meet the guidelines for ASHP accreditation, but flexible enough to meet the interests of the resident. The focus of the residency will be on providing pharmaceutical care for the pediatric patients of UF Health Shands Hospital. Participation in teaching and research is also expected.

  • Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Hematology and Oncology [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases [4 weeks]

  • Primary Preceptor Month [4 weeks]

Elective rotations

May be shortened to two weeks if elective preferences do not fit in 4-week schedule.

  • Pediatric Surgery [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care [4 weeks]

  • Academia [4 weeks]

  • Obstetrics [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine [4 weeks]

  • General Pediatrics – Advanced Practice [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) – Advanced Practice [4 weeks]

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – Advanced Practice [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (PCICU) – Advanced Practice [4 weeks]

  • Pediatric Hematology and Oncology – Advanced Practice [4 weeks]

Longitudinal requirements

  • Pediatric Medication Use Evaluation (MUE)

  • Pediatric Research Project – including a formal presentation and complete manuscript suitable for publication

  • Present two formal ACPE-accredited Grand Rounds presentations

  • Pediatric Clinical Administration, Medication Safety & Quality

  • Pediatric Emergency Response (elective experience)

Resident duties

  • Successfully achieve for residency at least 80% of all residency objectives

  • Complete staffing shifts equivalent to 16 to 20 hours every 21 days, including holidays as assigned, in addition to rotation through Pediatric Clinical On-Call

  • Obtain or maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

  • Complete PGY2 Appendix topic discussions and patient care experiences

  • Present a project at the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA) Annual Meeting or equivalent

  • Serve as a primary preceptor for an APPE student and/or PGY1 pharmacy resident

  • Complete, write, and publish an article for the Drugs & Therapy Bulletin or equivalent newsletter

  • Complete and present a medication monograph at the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee

  • Assist in the development or updating of a pharmacy policy

  • Develop a pediatric-specific order set or order panel for the electronic medical record

  • Provide education to medical or nursing staff regarding a pediatric pharmacy-related topic

Stipend

The resident receives a $56,368 stipend paid by UF Health Shands Hospital. The stipend, coupled with the comparatively low cost of living in Gainesville, should ensure a financially sufficient year.

Requirements

To be eligible for a Pediatric Pharmacy residency at UF Health Shands Hospital, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Academic: The applicant must be a graduate from an ACPE-accredited degree program (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a foreign pharmacy graduate examination committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP and have successfully completed or be in the process of completing an ASHP-Accredited or candidate-status Post-Graduate Year One residency.

  • Professional License: All residents must be eligible for Florida licensure. Selected and matched residents must be licensed by August 1st.

  • Interview: An interview with patient case presentation is required.

  • Foreign Applicants: To be considered for employment, you must presently have an employment authorization that is valid throughout the residency period.
