About me
As a board-certified critical care surgeon, I focus on treating injured and critically ill surgical patients. I am also a professor of surgery in the University of Florida College of Medicine and have published more than 100 papers and 22 book chapters with research interests in ultrasound in trauma and critical care, glycemic regulation in trauma, blunt chest injury, trauma systems and patient safety and performance improvement.
I earned my medical degree at the University of Arkansas and completed my residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. My post-grad training includes a surgical critical care fellowship at the St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California.
In 1981, I started serving in the United States Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of captain in the Medical Corps, until retiring in 2006. My career has brought numerous commendations from the U.S. Navy among other organizations. Since retiring, I served on the faculty at the University of California, Davis, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the University of Kansas-Wichita, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, the University of Virginia, Temple University and the University of South Carolina.
I am a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma and a senior member of the ACS Verification and Review Committee. I am also a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Western Trauma Association, where I serve as a member of the board of directors, in addition to having served as one of the three primary editors of the ACS Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient 2014.
