Sometimes, a patient's injuries or condition are too severe for standard medicinal or rehabilitative treatment. When this happens, the patient may require surgery. Bariatric Surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, limits the amount of food that can be taken into a person’s stomach.
Surgery may require the patient to stay in the hospital from one to several days or longer. However, with modern techniques and instruments, many surgeries today do not require the patient to stay overnight. Many times, the patient may be released the same day.
The goal for all Shands surgeries is to provide a safe and comfortable experience while undergoing a surgery.
