Board-certified UF Health interventional cardiology experts specialize in minimally invasive, catheter-based surgical procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease and heart valve disease.

Why choose UF Health?

UF Health’s highly skilled interventional cardiology team provides comprehensive care to heart patients using the most advanced, image-guided catheter-based procedures for cardiovascular disease. Identified as one of the nation’s high-performing hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery by US News and World Report, the expert team at UF Health is committed to collaborating with each patient to deliver the very best in interventional care.

Interventional cardiology procedures involve the insertion of catheters (thin, flexible tubes) inside blood vessels for diagnostic tests or to repair narrowed arteries or weakened heart valves. Procedures take place in UF Health’s state-of-the-art catheterization suites, which are equipped with advanced imaging technologies enabling procedures to be visualized in real time.

During interventional procedures, a catheter is inserted through a small incision in either the groin or wrist, and is guided through the blood vessels into the heart. With the catheter in place, the cardiologist can measure blood pressure, take blood samples and inject dyes into the coronary or other arteries to trace the movement of blood through the arteries and chambers of the heart. A cardiac catheterization can locate blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries, can identify the strength of the heart muscle and can assess the adequacy of valve function. Based on this information, the cardiologist can determine if a patient may benefit from interventional treatments, such as stent placement or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or if surgery is needed.
