Left Ventricular Assist System
The Heart Transplant Program at the UF Health Shands Transplant Center uses the HeartMate Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). The Heartmate device is implanted in the abdominal cavity and works in parallel with the natural heart by taking over the pumping action of the hearts left ventricle. An LVAD can be used as a device to bridge a patient while awaiting a suitable donor heart for transplant or as a permanent heart assist device for patients that don’t meet the criteria for heart transplant.
